Yoga for Grief – Online and In-Person with Michelle Thomas

November 14, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Grief takes so many different shapes in our lives. Grief is the internal and natural response to loss that is engrained in the human experience.

Everyone will inevitably be faced with a situation of significant loss and resultant grief, whether it is through:

  • Death
  • Illness
  • Injury
  • Natural disasters
  • Unemployment
  • Divorce
  • Serious health diagnosis
  • Sexual assault
  • Or a loss of roles or relationships

Oftentimes, those around us might offer us to “hold our head high” or remind us that “time heals all wounds,” but sometimes, it’s more helpful to sit with the loss, hang our heads and lean into the discomfort as we move through the waves of grief.

When we experience a loss, we might feel agitated, sad, indecisive, anxious, angry, or numb. Grief also manifests physically through:

  • Lethargy
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Dull aches
  • Oversleeping

Yoga provides us the tools to move from this place of uncertainty, towards a new way of understanding our grief, learning to sit with it and allow it to be there as we give ourselves time to heal.

In this 2-hour workshop, you will have the opportunity to try new tools and practices and realize how you can add them to your wellness toolkit when you experience waves of grief.

We hold grief, emotions, and trauma in our bodies. Through movement, breath and relaxation techniques, we experience a new way of living and create space for our emotions.

As challenging as it is to deal with such suffering, grief can bring us self-knowledge, the fuel we can use to open ourselves up to more love.

This workshop is ideal for:

Anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one.

  • Caregivers who need tools to cope.
  • Individuals who have experienced a sudden life change.
  • Those looking for tools to move out of grief and into acceptance.
  • Healthcare workers, teachers, and other frontline workers experiencing stress.

This workshop will include some movement practices, so wear comfortable clothing and bring your mat and any props to feel supported during your practice (i.e. blankets, bolsters/pillows and/or blocks).

Investment: $35 until Nov. 9; $40 thereafter

This workshop is open to all. HELD VIA LIVE STREAMING (use Front Studio Link) AND IN-Person at the Atma Center. Only 11 in-studio spaces will be available. We will confirm your preference following registration.

About the Instructor:
Michelle Thomas is a certified yoga instructor. She’s studied with Swami Atmarupa through a 6-month apprenticeship and has taken various training and workshops related to grief psychology. She has a long history of practicing yoga to overcome grief.

Michelle spent much of her childhood as a caretaker for her parents who suffered from various forms of cancer. In 2014, her mother Barbara succumbed to a 5-year battle with throat and lung cancer. In 2015, her stepfather, John, lost his battle to pancreatic cancer. In 2020, her father Dave suffered a fatal heart attack. Her own experiences with grief have allowed her to understand the process of grief and learn not to rush your healing, but instead to sit with sadness and create time and space for nostalgia to help you through.
